Current reefer market assessment for Q2/2025:

  • In the second quarter of 2025 the reefer market continues to face a tight situation in terms of capacity, equipment availability, extended transit times and short-term schedule reliability issues.
  • Port congestion and labor disputes in Northern European ports (Rotterdam, Le Havre and Antwerp) are causing delays and adding pressure to cold chain operations, including reefer plug shortages and longer inland transit times.
  • Reefer exporters to the US are now exploring alternative markets due to tariff risks
  • The demand for Reefer containers remains strong, driven by key commodities as fruits, meat and fish, diary product and pharmaceuticals
  • Reefer freight rates are expected to remain stable on a high level in Q2/25 on almost all trades due to strong demand and longer routes. Only on the LATAM & Africa trade lanes export rates will increase, mostly driven by peak fruit season and capacity issues. A Peak Season Surcharge (PSS) is also expected for trades from North Europe to USA, Canada and Mexico.
  • A high demand for reefer containers in Q2 is expected especially in South America and South Africa, where there is peak season for citrus fruits, berries, avocados and grapes.
  • Disruptions in the Red Sea lead to longer transit times, which have a significant impact on reefer equipment availability. Forecasting is essential as there is always the possibility of equipment shortages.
  • Direct end-to-end visibility of reefer ocean freight is becoming a standard for the world’s shipping containers. We recommend and can provide independent monitoring of temperature, humidity and the position of your reefer cargo.
  • When it comes to sustainability, reefer ocean freight has a significantly lower carbon footprint than air freight.
